Pat Robertson: Divorcing Over Alzheimer’s Acceptable, It’s ‘A Kind Of Death’

Buzzing around the blogosphere has been this clip from Tuesday’s 700 Club, in which the evangelical host Pat Robertson said divorce was acceptable if one’s spouse had Alzheimer’s, as the disease is a “type of death.”

Robertson’s provocative statement was spurred on by a viewer email who detailed a friend going through difficult times with his significant other who suffered from the disease and didn’t even recognize him anymore. The viewer’s friend wondered if he should be allowed to see other people.

“I know it sounds cruel,” answered the Christian broadcaster. “But if he’s going to do something, he should divorce her and start all over again, but make sure she has custodial care and somebody looking after her.”

Co-host Terry Meeuwsen questioned Robertson about whether marriage vows should matter, where a couple pledge to be together “for better or for worse”. Robertson responded, “If you respect that vow, you say ’til death do us part. This is a kind of death.”

Perhaps realizing the potential controversy from his response, Robertson added an addendum, “Get some ethicist besides me to give you the answer.”
